Chemical elements listed by symbol

Look up all 118 chemical elements by symbol, with their names and atomic numbers.

The list is alphabetical by chemical symbol, rather than by element name or atomic number. Select an element name to open its individual page.

Element symbols A–Z

Read down the left-hand table, then continue at the top of the right-hand table. The columns stack on smaller screens. Z denotes atomic number. One-letter symbols come before longer symbols with the same first letter: B precedes Ba, and C precedes Ca.

Capitalization matters

Each element in this list has a one- or two-letter symbol. The first letter is uppercase; the second, if present, is lowercase. Write Al for aluminium, Cl for chlorine and Sn for tin.

Co is cobalt. C and O are the separate symbols for carbon and oxygen. Changing capitalization can change how a chemical formula is read.

Why a symbol may differ from the English name

A symbol is a standardized identifier, rather than an abbreviation that must match the English spelling. Familiar examples include Fe — iron, Na — sodium, K — potassium and W — tungsten. Element names may vary between languages, while the standardized symbols provide a common notation.

Symbols, formulas and atomic numbers

NotationHow to read it
NaThe symbol for sodium, atomic number 11.
NaClA chemical formula containing the symbols Na (sodium) and Cl (chlorine).
Na+A sodium ion with one positive charge. Its atomic number remains 11.

The atomic number counts protons and identifies the element. It is different from atomic mass. See the atomic-number list and atomic-mass list for explanations.

Current symbols and older temporary labels

Older publications may use temporary three-letter symbols. For example, Uuo was the temporary symbol for element 118, now oganesson (Og). This list uses the permanent names and symbols of the 118 recognised elements.
