How to read this list

What is an atomic number?

The atomic number is the number of protons in an atom’s nucleus. For example, carbon has atomic number 6. Atomic number is different from atomic mass; see the list by atomic mass to compare masses.

Why do some symbols differ from the English name?

Some symbols come from older names. For example, iron is Fe from ferrum, gold is Au from aurum, and sodium is Na from natrium. Capital letters matter: Co is cobalt, while CO is a formula for carbon monoxide.

Aluminium or aluminum? Caesium or cesium?

Aluminium and aluminum are names for the same element (Al, 13); caesium and cesium refer to the same element (Cs, 55). This list retains aluminum and cesium as its main entries and shows the alternatives alongside them. Sulfur (S, 16) is also written sulphur in British usage. These spelling differences do not create additional elements.

How does an alphabetical list differ from the periodic table?

Alphabetical order helps you find a name quickly. The periodic table orders elements by atomic number and arranges them in periods and groups to show patterns in their properties.
