Ozone Systems

What are ozone systems?

Ozone systems produce ozone (O3) on site for disinfection and oxidation. In water treatment, ozone is transferred into the water, where it reacts with microorganisms and oxidizable substances. A treatment system combines ozone generation with gas preparation, injection or mixing, monitoring and equipment to destroy excess ozone.

Key advantages of ozone treatment

  • Disinfection: Ozone can inactivate bacteria, viruses and certain resistant microorganisms when the dose and contact time suit the application.
  • Oxidation: Ozone can treat oxidizable compounds and help address taste, odour and colour problems.
  • On-site generation: Ozone is produced from air or oxygen close to the point of use.

Unlike filtration, which separates particles from water, ozone treatment works through chemical reactions. It can complement filtration rather than replace it. Compared with chlorine, ozone decomposes relatively quickly and does not provide a lasting disinfectant residual; a separate treatment step may therefore be needed where residual protection is required.
