What is electrolysis?

Electrolysis is a process where electrical energy will change in chemical energy. The process happens in an electrolyte, a watery solution or a salt melting which gives the ions a possibility to transfer between two electrodes.

Which is the disinfection mechanism?

In the process of electrolysis, the water is exposed to a low-voltage direct current between the electrodes. Salts present in the water between the electrodes will be converted into oxidizing or disinfecting components.
Positive ions generated in the water through electrolysis search for particles of opposite polarity, such as bacteria, viruses and fungi. Positively charged copper ions form electrostatic compounds with negatively charged cell walls of microorganisms. These compounds disturb cell wall permeability and cause nutrient uptake to fail. As a result, there is no more cellular growth or cell division, causing bacteria to no longer multiply and eventually die out.
Electrolysis will, among other disinfectants, also create sodium hypochlorite, which is able to kill a great variety of germs and then is very used as disinfectant in swimming pools.

How does the system work?

The chlorinator system electrolytic cells use electricity to convert brine water to a safe dilute sodium hypochlorite solution. The system consist of the following components:

  • Control cabinet with connections to the electrode cell, and start/stop imput cable

  • Electrode cell, installed in a 63 mm PVC pipe with two couplers. Provided with the cable to connect the control cabinet

  • Potential free contact to start/stop process

  • Manual for proper use of the equipment

  • Chlorine measurement strips, for the measuring of the free chlorine level of the water.

For which application can the chlorinator system be used?

Chlorinator systems are designed for disinfection of drinking- and swimming pool water, odor control of slime and marine growths in e.g. cooling water towers, circulating water and service water systems. It can also be found on board ships, in campers, in sport centers and health care facilities.

The chlorinator system:

  • reduces bacteria and virus presence to safe levels;

  • Control marine organisms and slime growth in seawater fed systems

  • Disinfect sewage and industrial effluents and water-cooling systems

  • Reduce COD in sewage digester supernatant, sludge filtrates and concentrates

  • Destroy cyanides and other oxidable chemicals in industrial process waters

  • Produces pH friendly chlorine for your swimming pool

  • Control legionnaire bacteria

How is the chlorinator system installed in swimming pools?

The electrolysis cell will be mounted as last in the filter line, just before the filtered water enters the swimming pool. The electrolysis filter is running when the filter pump is running. The electrolysis process converts the salts in the water into sodium hypochlorite.
The optimal salt concentration is 1.5 – 3 g/liter, about double the average salt concentration in freshwater systems.

With this system you do not need extra-chlorine.

The amount of contamination of the water defines the production level; the system can be easily being adjusted to the right production level. It is provided with test strip to determine the right production.
The anti-chloriantor can sanitize swimming pools up to 200 m3 capacity.
