Understanding water hardness

Water hardness is mainly a measure of the dissolved calcium and magnesium ions in water. Higher concentrations make water harder and can increase limescale formation, particularly when water is heated, as well as the amount of soap needed for washing. Hardness is commonly expressed as an equivalent concentration of calcium carbonate (CaCO3), or in German, French or English degrees. These units describe the same water property on different scales. Use the converter above to compare a measured hardness value across units; converting the value does not change the hardness of the water.
