Pentair X-Flow membranes for water and wastewater treatment

Pentair X-Flow membrane technology is used to produce drinking and process water, treat wastewater for reuse, and provide pretreatment for reverse osmosis. Ultrafiltration (UF) uses a pressure difference to pass water through a membrane while retaining suspended solids, colloids and microorganisms. Dissolved salts and minerals generally pass through UF membranes, so ultrafiltration serves a different purpose from desalination.

Different modules for different applications

Aquaflex and XIGA hollow-fibre membrane systems are used for surface-water and groundwater treatment. The Aquaflex 55, for example, can operate in dead-end or feed-and-bleed mode and uses regular backwashing, with chemically enhanced backwashing for cleaning. These operating modes allow filtration and cleaning to be adapted to the application.

For streams with higher solids concentrations, the Compact 33V uses tubular UF membranes. Its applications include separating water from biological sludge in membrane bioreactors (MBRs), water recycling in algae production, and pretreatment of high-solids feedwater before reverse osmosis. The module can be used in an Airlift configuration, combining air, forward flushing and backflushing to help control membrane fouling.

The X-Flow range also includes technologies beyond conventional ultrafiltration. The HFW1000, described as a nanofiltration module in its datasheet, targets colour-causing organic substances such as humic and fulvic acids while retaining relatively little salt. This makes the distinction between particle removal, colour removal and desalination important when comparing modules.

Benefits and module selection

UF can provide compact treatment installations and consistent treated-water quality for particle and microbial removal. Module selection depends on the feedwater, the desired filtrate quality and the operating configuration.
