Toxicity evaluation of industrial and land base sources in a river basin

Abstract
In this study, an ecotoxicological survey of complex mixture effluents collected from textile, leather and municipal influents and effluents, an unsanitary landfill leachate, and river waters and sediments of the Ergene River Basin is presented. Acute toxicity tests were applied by bacterial luminescence method with Vibrio fischeri and expressed as Toxicity Unit (T.U.) defined as 100/EC50. In parallel, conventional pollution parameters (COD, BOD, NH4, sulfide, color, etc.) and heavy metals were analyzed. The results indicate that river water and sediments are polluted severely and urgently need to control.
Conclusion
In this study, ecotoxicological assessment of point and non-point pollution sources in the example of Ergene River Basin was assessed. A field survey was used to detect a possible cause-effect relationship between pollution sources and ambient water quality in the basin. Textile, leather and municipal effluents were selected as representative of the range common wastewater types entering the Ergene River Basin Acute toxicity of industrial wastewater influents and effluents, sediments, leachates and ambient river water was investigated. Bioluminescent test is used to assess toxicity of water and sediment samples. The main outlines of this study can be given as the following: – The water of Ergene River is polluted severely, especially regarding color, organics, total chromium, total sulfide and ammonium concentration. The highly polluted sites were determined those located near the most urbanized and industrialized area, Çorlu and Çerkezköy. Uncontrolled landfill leachates are important pollution sources in the area as well.
