Description:
It is a readable introductory text that systematically
introduces pollution issues to students and others with little scientific
background. Naquita Hill moves from a definition of pollution and how
pollutant behave, to the basics of air and water pollution, global change,
solid waste and pollution in the home. This new edition discusses specific
pollutants including persistent and bioaccumulative chemicals and
pesticides, and also places greater emphasis on global pollutants. The
relationship between energy egeration and use, and pollution is stressed.
This text also stresses going beyond pollution control to pollution
prevention ans sustainability. Many examples come fron US, but comparisions
are made to other developed countries, and each chapter has a section on
developing nations. Impacts on human and environmental health are emphasized
throughout. Students are often invited to come on their own conclusions
after having been presented with a variety of options.
This book provides the basic concept of pollution, toxicology and risk
assessment for non-science majors as well as environmental science students.
Review:
"...provides a thorough background to pollution, from global issues to
personal pollution in the home...an excellent introduction to the subject,
providing the right information to enable students to evaluate environmental
problems for themselves." Environmental Assessment Magazine
