Definition of aromatherapyAromatherapy is the art of inducing relaxation of body & mind, relieving pain and promoting well-being, health and beauty through the use of aromatic fragrances. Aromatherapy stimulates the nervous system and emotional centres of the brain, having a pleasant and calming effect. There are different techniques for the application of aromatherapy. History of aromatherapy The Greek, Egyptians and Romans used essential oils for medical and beauty purposes mainly. 6000 years ago, the Egyptian and physician Imhotep recommended the application of aromatic oils as fragrances for baths, massages and balming. Cleopatra was famous for her beauty. She used to have cleaning treatments and oil baths to improve the properties, health and shine of her skin and hair. Hipoccrates, known as the father of modern medicine, uses oils for aromatherapy and massage techniques as curative methods. He also fumigated with essences in order to impede and avoid plagues in Athens. Once Century A.C, the Roman and historian Pliny, author of the great book Natural History, describes 32 remedies based on roses, 21 on Lilles, 17 with violet and others.
