Fountains with Clear Water

Are fountains dangerous because of Legionella spread?

Fountains can be ideal spreaders of micro-organisms such as bacteria or in the worst case Legionella. When? If the temperature of the water reaches 25°C or higher and the water is sprayed. Legionella can only be dangerous when little droplets or aerosols are inhaled by people with impaired immune defence. However, fountains are often situated near squares where a lot of people stay or near the entrance of companies where all personnel is walking along... Besides, fountains are often situated in shallow ponds so that the sun heats up the water very quickly to dangerous temperatures. The sunlight also causes algae growth which turns the water green and allows growth of a biofilm layer, which is an ideal breeding place for the Legionella bacteria.
