The industry of the meat, poultry and seafood field are famous to generate a large scale of wastes: waste water and solid wastes. Theses wastes are shown in the following drawing:

These kinds of food processing generate wastewater with an extremely high BOD and a lot of organic pollutants and impurities. Indeed, the wastewater from a slaughterhouse contains blood by-product, manure, hair, feathers, bones and so on. In the food water processing of meat, poultry, and seafood facilities offer the most difficult waste stream to treat. In addition to the organic materials the waste water contains nitrogen, all kind of bacteria, parasites, cysts.

How to treat the waste water:

Pretreatment: screens, flotation (sometimes aided by flotation in adding chemicals) to remove SS and emulsified fats
Biological treatment
Biofilters, carbon filters and scrubbers for the air control

These industries are faced with the disease problems because of the pathogenic organisms carried and spread by livestock, poultry, and seafood.
