Algae filtration from superficial water

In 1996 Hydrotech carried out some tests to prove the effectiveness of its filters and demonstrated possibilities of a potential market for its drumfilters and discfilters in blue-green algae removal from surface water.
These tests were performed at a municipal sewage treatment plant in Australia.
The Hydrotech model 801-1H was placed at the outlet from a pond, and tests were run on different filter openings: 10, 20 and 40 microns. Results show that in average 10 microns seems to be most efficient: 74% removal of microcystis aeruginosa, 20% both of pseudoanabalena ssp and planktonlyngobya subtilis, 100% removal of oscillatoria ssp. Some species form colonies, which breaks up into smaller pieces in the filter.
To obtain better results, the raw water should be fed to the filter as gentle as possible and alga particles might be stabilized and congregated by addition of polyaluminiumchoride.
