Air pollution

Acrolein

Properties of acrolein is described below

PHYSICAL STATE; APPEARANCE:
YELLOW TO COLOURLESS LIQUID , WITH PUNGENT ODOUR.

PHYSICAL DANGERS:
The vapour is heavier than air and may travel along the ground; distant ignition possible.

CHEMICAL DANGERS:
The substance can form explosive peroxides. The substance may polymerize with fire and explosion hazard. Upon heating, toxic fumes are formed. Reacts with strong acids , strong bases and strong oxidants , causing fire and explosion hazard.

OCCUPATIONAL EXPOSURE LIMITS:
TLV: 0.1 ppm (Ceiling value); (skin); A4; (ACGIH 2004).
OSHA PEL: TWA 0.1 ppm (0.25 mg/m3)
NIOSH REL: TWA 0.1 ppm (0.25 mg/m3) ST 0.3 ppm (0.8 mg/m3)
NIOSH IDLH: 2 ppm

ROUTES OF EXPOSURE:
The substance can be absorbed into the body by inhalation of its vapour, through the skin and by ingestion.

INHALATION RISK:
A harmful contamination of the air can be reached very quickly on evaporation of this substance at 20°C.

EFFECTS OF SHORT-TERM EXPOSURE:
Tear drawing. The substance is severely irritating to the eyes the skin and the respiratory tract . Inhalation of this substance at high levels may cause lung oedema. The effects may be delayed. Medical observation is indicated.
