The spiral wound membrane has proven to be the most efficient format for dissolved solids filtration. SpiraSep combines the structural advantages of a spiral wound membrane with air scour, backflushing and immersed operation.

Untill now ultrafiltration and microfiltration membranes have to a large extent been manufactured using the hollow fiber format, due to the inability of the spiral and the ability of the hollow to be backflushed. Spirasep membranes use the spiral wound format, with consequent high structural integrity and direct, controlled access to the membrane surface, and can be backflushed.

Description:

Flat sheet polymeric organic membrane, cast onto a support fabric, is enclosed between layers of feed spacer and permeate carrier materials, forming a leaf. Multiple leaves are enrolled into a cylinder and attached to a permeate tube.

The spiral construction using multiple layers provide superior integrity.

The feed channels of the spiral enable an effective distribution of feedwater and air scour directly on the total membrane surface.

Backflush:

The conventional membranes for RO, NF and UF applications are designed to handle pressure differential between the feed and the permeate side.
A leaf adhesive performs like a gasket and it is not normally subjected to shear forces.
To enable backflushing capabilities a combination between support fabric and membrane was designed, to withstands frequent cycling between permeate production and backflushing. An adhesive was developed that withstands backflush pressures. Is exhibits excellent membrane wetting properties and high peel strength.

Operating conditions

SpiraSep membranes are designed to operate in an immersed, suction based mode. This implies the use of low pressures (0.14-0.34 bar) with consequent very low fouling.
The cylindrical membranes elements are designed to be assembled into a modular arrangement very easily.
Specific Flux is the volume of permeate produced per unit area old membrane per unit of time per unit of suction pressure. In general low operating pressure results in low specific flux. SpiraSep, thanks to its spiral feed channel, provides high fluxes at low operating pressures.

Application

SpiraSep is applicable to a wide variety of water and wastewater sources for the removal of suspended solids.
Operating results on applications such as secondary municipal effluent, various surface waters, physical/chemical precipitation of industrial effluent and landfill leachate have proven SpiraSep to be very competitive in the ultrafiltration market.

Benefits
  • Successful operation on wastewater, surface water and drinking water
  • High quality effluent (reduction of TSS, TOC, colour)
  • Low energy consumption (no recirculation and backwash pump required)
  • Low capital costs (simple construction and low packaging costs)
  • Lower costs for operation and maintenance (no pumps, longer membranes life)
  • Lower installation costs
  • Low waste volume (recovery higher than 90% and low cleaning frequency)
  • High flexibility in component construction
