Regenerative adsorption polymers

At adsorption on polymers as an adsorbens a polymer is used. These are really plastic balls. The polymeric costs approximately 20 times more than active carbon. For this reason polymers are only used at regenerative applications. At the production of polymers pores of several size arise. The smallest pores of a polymer are however still larger than the micropores of active carbon. Polymers have a low selectivity to VOC adsorption. Each type of polymer has a specific VOC for which the adsorption is better. Polymers have also high adsorption capacity. The polymer is used in a fixed bed to catch the VOC. The saturation and evolution of the adsorption zone are the same as at active carbon. Polymers have a linear adsorption isotherm. This means that their adsorption capacity increase proportionally by the partial pressure of the VOC in the degasses. How higher press of the degasses and how higher the concentration in the degasses, how more VOC by kg polymer can be taken.

Polymers are possible used with active carbon and zeolites. This is possible both in serial where the polymers are in the first staircase with the high concentrations and the zeolites in a second staircase the low concentrations to capture as in a mixed bed.
The advantages are:

  • Simple and robust technology

  • Easy desorption of the VOC

  • High adsorption capacity

  • No inclination to catalytic responses which lead to spontaneous
    combustion

  • Long life span

  • Few moist sensitivity

  • Arranged for discontinue processes

  • Easy maintenance

  • Easy to place

The disadvantages are:

  • Substance can ensure constipations

  • Mixtures of components can ensure a fast disruption

  • High initial cost
